Bile is produced by the liver, but it is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder until you eat a fatty meal. When fats enter the small intestine, a hormone signals the gallbladder to contract and release bile through the common bile duct into the duodenum. There, bile salts emulsify fats, aiding digestion. The duodenum is not a storage site, and the pancreas has its own secretions; it does not store bile.
